FIRST SPAWNS

There will be 3 bonus points awarded to fish spawned for the first time within the Society's BAP, from Classes C, D, E and F only. However, breeders wishing to claim the bonus points for a first spawn must complete a written article (as opposed to a verbal report).

REQUIREMENTS

  1. For all six classes, the participating member must spawn and raise ten fry to 60 days of age. This requirement may be reduced to five fry for certain species, at the discretion of the BAP Committee.

  2. The participant is required to pay a one-time Initiation fee of $10. In addition, a $3 registration fee will be paid for each spawn reported to the BAP. The BAP will be self-funding and the various fees will be used to offset the cost of purchasing awards etc.

  3. In addition to the above, fish spawned in Classes C and D shall require an article, of 250 words or more, covering the spawning. Classes E and F shall require an article of 500 words or more. A talk may be given at a meeting, in lieu of the written articles for Classes C and D only. Articles are not required for spawnings from Classes A and B.

  4. In the event that a species has been spawned several times within the Society, the breeder may write an article on another hobby-related topic. This does not apply to Classes E and F which will always require an article.

  5. Once an aquarist has reached the Senior Breeder level, articles are only required for Classes D, E and F.

  6. If you write regularly for Fish Tales, you will receive credit for your articles towards future BAP spawnings, except in the case of Classes E and F.

  7. An aquarist will only receive full points once for each species. A second spawning of the same species will receive half points (fractions will be rounded off). Any further spawns of the same species will only be credited towards the Specialisation Awards.

REPORTING AND VERIFICATION OF SPAWNS

  1. All spawns must be registered with the BAP Chairman (or delegate in times of absence), within 7 days of birthing or hatching. The BAP Chairman will then arrange for a member of the BAP Committee to visit the home of the participant to verify the spawn.

  2. The BAP Chairman, or the delegate, must report his spawns to another member of the BAP Committee who will then verify the spawn.

  3. The participant must have a prepared BAP form ready when the committee member visits to verify the spawn. The spawn will not be verified without a completed form. The committee member verifying the spawn must sign and date the form at the time of the verification. (BAP forms are available from the BAP Chairman).

  4. In cases where the identity of the species may not be immediately clear to tile committee member verifying the spawn, the onus is on the breeder to provide proof of the species identity. Ideally, this will be done by means of photographs (in a book or magazine). Should the species be unidentified, a photograph of the parents should be provided and attached to the BAP form. Points will be credited once the species has been identified.

  5. When the spawn is in a community setting, the onus is on the breeder to ensure that the fry are visible to the person verifying the spawn

  6. When the fry have reached sixty days of age, the BAP Chairman should be reminded by the participant, so that the final verification can be made.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

  1. Any member of the Society is eligible to participate in the BAP Members living under the same roof may participate as a partnership. However, points credited to a partnership cannot be credited to an individual, even in the event that the partnership breaks tip.

  2. Members are responsible for obtaining, completing and turning in BAP forms.

  3. The BAP Committee will be responsible for placing any unclassed Fish into a class and for re--classifying certain fish from time to time. In the case of a fish being placed into a higher class, all previous spawns will receive the higher points; however, fish placed into a lower class will not be penalised points if spawned prior to the date the classification was lowered. Any member may request reclassification of a fish at the time he reports the spawn but the decision of the BAP Committee is final. Fish not classified should be accompanied by a recommendation by the breeder as to the class he feels that it should be placed in, with the reasons why.

  4. Eggs must be obtained from a member's own spawning and not from an outside source. The parent fish must belong to the member registering the spawn.

  5. Articles will be submitted to the BAP Chairman only, or arrangements made with him for an oral report.

  6. Points will only be credited when all criteria have been met, i.e. first and second verifications, completed BAP form, and submission of article or verbal report.

  7. Some marine invertebrates are listed under the points classification. Any successful spawning of a marine invertebrate which is not listed will be referred to the B.A.P. Committee who will decide upon a point value, after consulting with the membership and professional marine aquarists. Only invertebrates which reproduce sexually will be considered.

  8. For the Breeder of the Year Award, all points earned in that year will count (only points awarded due to an upgrading of a fish, and points pending from a previous year, i.e. awaiting articles, will not count). Points will be credited only for fry which hatch, or are delivered (livebearers), within the year in question. Therefore, if fry hatch on 31st December, and are subsequently awarded points upon reaching 60 days of age (on 3rd March for example) those points will still be credited toward the previous year's total provided that the necessary criteria have been met and the points are awarded by 31st march.

  9. Spawns resulting from indiscriminate hybridisation will not be considered for credit in the BAP This will not affect species which have developed from a degree of hybridisation, such as Angels, Bettas and Livebearers.

  10. Hatching, in the case of mouthbrooding species, shall be taken as the time the fry are first released from the mouth. In the case of livebearers, it shall be the time that the fry are delivered. Hatching in other egg-layers is as the term implies.

  11. The BAP Committee will have the final say in any disputes.
